Close reading
Cites little or no text, and little textual analysis.
Performs three close readings.
Performs three close readings that develop his/her thesis.
Sentence length variation
Student wrote in sentences.
Student wrote in sentences of varied length.
Student wrote in varied sentences, occasionally using short sentences for emphasis.
Grammar and mechanics
Student wrote with some spelling errors, or subject verb agreement, or incorrect semicolon usage, or incorrect colon usage.
Student wrote with no spelling errors, or subject verb agreement and correctly used colons.
Student wrote clearly, flawlessly, honing his/her voice throughout the essay.
